Creating a Custom Snapshot Collection

If you do not want to use a volume collection, you can still create snapshots of multiple volumes in a single operation. The resulting set of snapshots, one for each volume, is called a custom snapshot collection.

Before you can create a custom snapshot collection, all the volumes must have sufficient snapshot space reserved. See Modifying Snapshot Settings for information about reserving snapshot space.

Note: If you often create snapshots of the same set of volumes, you may want to create a volume collection, as described in Managing Volume Collections, and create a snapshot collection of the volume collection.

To create a custom snapshot collection, click:

Volumes > Multi-volume snapshot

The Create Multi-Volume Snapshot - General Settings dialog box appears (Figure 10: Create Multi-Volume Snapshot - General Settings ).

Enter a name for the custom snapshot collection and an optional description and click Next. The Create Multi-Volume Snapshot - Components dialog box appears (Figure 11: Create Multi-Volume Snapshot - Components ).

Select the volumes and click Next. The Create Multi-Volume Snapshot - Summary dialog box appears (Figure 12: Create Multi-Volume Snapshot - Summary ).

If the configuration is satisfactory, click Finish to create the custom snapshot collection. Click Back to correct any information.

The resulting snapshots will appear in the far left panel under the volume names, identified by the date and time when the snapshots were created.

The actual name of a custom snapshot collection will be the name you specified in the General Settings dialog box (Figure 10: Create Multi-Volume Snapshot - General Settings ), followed by the date and time when the snapshots were created. For example, a custom snapshot collection named mailsnapcol will appear as mailsnapcol-2006-06-20-11:17:04.67.
